Description

The standing figure of Fudō Myōō with the sword and noose in his hands against the flaming mandorla on a rock pedestal faithfully follows traditional iconography, yet it is a woven textile. The woven image bears the title of a temple on its rock pedestal: ‘Jindai-san’. One very old temple with this name is Jindai-san Daishō-ji in the town of Koshigaya, modern-day Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo. According to legend it was built for Fudō Myōō as early as 750 AD and became very famous in mediaeval times. As the oldest in the area of Koshigaya, the temple is still famous as the Fudō Myōō of Ōsagami and also as the twenty-sixth station on the route of the eighty-eight stations of the Land of Musashi.
