Description

Kongōsatta is the central of Five Esoteric Bodhisattvas (gohimitsu).  It is one of the central deities of the Shingon School, regarded to be the second of the eight patriarchs when holding a bell. With a lotus bud in her left hand it is regarded to be an incarnation of the Fugen bosatsu, and therefore it is often depicted seated on an elephant. This large gilt and lacquered Kongōsatta (S. Vajrasattva) seated in dyánaasána position is holding a vajra in the right and a lotus bud in the left hand (both attributes were stolen during an exhibition in 1981). The face is oblong and peaceful the body is slim and supple. The face is covered with gilding, as well as the chest and hands, while her tenne is lacquered with remnants of polychrome. The body and head are carved from one piece of hinoki wood, later hollowed and joined (warihagi). Hairdress, hands and attributes were carved separately. She was originally seated on a rengeza, but it was later lost. This statue belongs among the most graceful ones in Prague NG collection. It is derived from the Seated Kongōsatta by Kaikei from Kyoto's Zuishin-in, dating from the first quarter of the 13th c..
