Description

Incarnation of the moisture and the nourishing power of the soil, Ugajin appears as an old man with a white snake's body (hakuja 白蛇), which is apparent to India's famous dragons-snakes (nāga). Because of its formidable power, its statues are usually not shown to the public but hidden in a shrine. Compared with other examples of this type, this piece is marked by its large size and its antiquity.

Acquisition backgroundThis piece comes from Kikou Yamata (1897-1975), she was French by her mother and Japanese by her father. Born in Lyon, where she spent her childhood, she lived in Japan until 1923. She returned to France after her father's death and became an unofficial ambassador of Japanese culture in Paris. Kikou Yamata had gathered as a connoisseur many objects relating to the Japanese culture, which she and her husband, the Swiss painter Conrad Meili, had decided to bequeath to the MEG. They were handed over to the institution during the internment of Kikou Yamata, who became a widow in 1969.
