Description

Standing figure of Amida Nyorai displaying the raigō-in (welcoming) mudra of the first level of rebirth in his western paradise: upper grade, upper birth or jōbon jōshō. It is adorned with a prominent crystal byakugō (S. ūrṇā) as well as nikkeishu jewel at the front of the nikkei (S. ushnisha). The body of the figure leaning slightly forward as an allusion to the raigō iconography, which is consistent with the mudra.

Material and technique

Assembled woodblock technique (J. yosegi-zukuri) with gold and lacquer, crystal eyes (J. gyokugan), ūrṇā (J. byakugō), and nikkei jewel.
