Description

The two Buddhas Shaka and Hōshō seated with the stupa embodying the main scripture of the Nichiren School, the Lotus Sūtra, between them. The title of the sūtra, simultaneously the odaimoku of the Nichiren School, is adorning the front of the stupa. The altar for private use would have originally fitted into a zushi. There is an inscription on the rear. The two figures are carved from hard compact wood  and adorned directly with kirikane gold leaf, without a lacquer layer, which is the kiji-kirikane technique. The style is reminiscent of the early fragrant wood sculptures of danzō. The inscription mentions the name "Chikakuin 25th [abbot] Nikkei". The name Nikkei was used by several Nichiren School monks: one active in the 17th century as 18th abbot of Honko-ji, Shinagawa, another as the 23rd abbot (1648-1707) of Taiseki-ji, Shizuoka, another a monk affiliated with the Nakayama Hokekyō-ji in the 18th century. It is possible that more and less known monks also used this name and therefore a direct identification is difficult.

Material and technique

Carved, cut gold leaf on wood (J. kiji-kirikane). Pedestal: carved wood with lacquer, gilt and polychromy. Gyokugan crystal eyes for the shishi.
